    FAQ

  • Other questions ?

The project and the community grow and evolve. We are also continuously improving. If you have any questions, explore our wiki or see answers to frequently asked questions. If your question has not been answered, please use the contact form below. We are happy to have you as a supporter of this challenge.

    Why an extreme Challenge ?

    - Because we must evolve to preserve our quality of life.

We simply have no choice. In 2021, ADEME carried out a large prospective study to achieve carbon neutrality in 4 scenarios. In some scenarios, new vehicle types are offered. It is probable, in any case desirable, that in the future we move:

    Less

By questioning each of these movements, to avoid it, combine it, share it.

La Fabrique des Mobilités notably carries out several actions on the subject of demobility.

    And Better

Choose the most suitable mode of transport, the quickest, perhaps, the cheapest, undoubtedly, but also and above all the most economical possible from now on.

As for the vehicles themselves, weighing more than 1 ton, with 5 or even 7 seats, to travel alone a few dozen kilometers per day, they contribute both directly to GHG emissions, to the consumption of fossil fuels and indirectly to the morphology of public space.

To write the rest of the story

“Intra-muros”, in city centers, from walking to public transport or cycling, including the fleets of vehicles (scooters, bicycles, taxis) available, the offers abound and changes in behavior are already underway to operate.

As soon as we leave the centers, the car often remains the only answer and we know that electrification alone “all other things being equal” will not be enough.

Today, in most developed territories in Europe and around the world, a category of vehicles is missing that would “increase” the relevance of the bicycle without necessarily becoming a “car” capable of driving on the highway at more than 130 km/h. .

What is this eXtreme Challenge ?

We invite you to consult this wiki page describing the eXtreme Défi

Who organise this extreme Challenge ?

ADEME, French Agency For Ecological Transition, is organising this challenge bringing resources, tools and organisation. This program is funded by France 2030. Moreover, many partners are involved in order to bring skills and resources.

I already have one or more vehicles running, can I participate in the eXtreme Challenge ?

What is an Interoperable Rolling Object System ?

It is precisely up to the candidates to think about it and give us the answer ! However, our hypothesis is that to meet the challenge, the traditional response of a "Swiss army knife" object - like the car as we know it - good for everything, from the Equator to the Poles, is no longer the good answer, both from a technical (micro-factories, local fablab) and ethical (ecological footprint) point of view.

Since they are vehicles for short daily distances, they are linked to a territory, its topology, its road network, and also intimately linked to targeted uses. There is therefore no longer a universal right answer, but several objects which must then integrate and interact with each other... hence the idea of a system. Interoperability then imposes itself in order to be able to switch from one use to another, and also to significantly reduce costs (one object, several uses and several possible "lives"): vehicle with passengers then transport of goods for example. Standardization is also necessary, for these same reasons.
